The Community EOD Data hub, funded by the Irregular Warfare Technical Support Directorate (IWTSD) subgroup for EOD and Explosive Operations in 2022 was designed to support two key groups of users:

The EOD or Public Safety Bomb Technician

To provide easy searchable access to images of threats captured by their colleagues, and to help identify components in threat imagery.

Developers Creating the Future of EOD Technology

To provide a vast collection of expertly labeled data capable of assisting in the development of new artificial intelligence solutions for EOD.

The Game and Competition

Every key portion of the Hub awards users with points, badges, and levels. Competitions will be organized to test the skills of the user base along with improving data quality. Competitions will reward the winners with different prizes from badges and certificates to T shirts and other swag.

Basics

Home Screen

The home screen provides a link to all the functionality of the Community EOD Data Hub, provides news, and shows the score of the top 10 performers. The home page is split into a few different functional sections as shown in Figure 3 and described here:

1. The navigation and progress bar are shown on every EOD Hub page and allow you to go to any other portion of the page, and see your current level and progress in contribution to the site.

2. The announcement section keeps everyone up to date on new happenings on the Hub

3. Navigation is mirrored in this section

4. The top 10 performers are shown in comparison to your score. If you’re less than a top 10 performer, others cannot see your score.

My Account

https://eoddatahub.com/account

My Account is split into 5 distinct feature sets

1. Editing profile or changing the password (found on the right)

2. Award and level status. (tab 1)

3. Uploads – click here to see all the pictures you’ve ever uploaded. (tab 2)

4. Exports – click here to re-download any pictures you’ve queried. (tab 3)

5. My Images – Shows the user all the work their colleagues have done on their images. (tab 4)

The Game

The My Account page shows the users progress across the various skill tasks on the site. Users are rewarded for uploading data, labeling data, downloading data, and otherwise interacting with the site. Each category has 10 levels, and the progress towards the next level can be seen on the first tab of My Account. Winning awards goes towards your overall level on the site. These metrics along with competitions get your name and organization on the leaderboard.

Upload Media

Media upload can be reached via the navigation bar on the top of the page, or from the home page on the bottom left. When loaded, the user is instructed to drag files onto the webpage. If files are dragged in, the user will see something similar to the Figure above.

When uploading, buttons at the top enable the user to select:

1.      Whether they want to label their images after upload

2.      If all the images are post blast

3.      Toggle images as containing graphic content

The interface also allows users to individually select a photo as post blast or containing graphic content. Users can remove all images, or individual images using the provided buttons.

Labeling Data

Label Images

The label image tool is the core of EOD Data Hub. Without people labeling images, the images won’t be searchable are categorizable. Most of the points, badges, and levels available to users come from labeling images, and labeling images is the core of all future competitions on the Hub.

You may encounter the label images tool when:

1. Selecting label images from the navigation bar or the home page

2. Selected the option to label your own images after upload

3. In an image collection competition

In all cases, you’ll be brought to the same web application, which loads an image, and provides the user tools to label the image using a type-by-function taxonomy. The user drags boxes around the components of an IED, or a piece of ordnance, and uses the tools to select, to the best of their ability, the type-by-function of that item in the picture.

Basic Image Manipulation Controls

Before any labeling can occur, the user must often scroll and zoom the picture to better understand the image content. Users can scroll with the mouse wheel to zoom in and out. Users can hold alt+click and drag the image around or use the keyboard arrow keys to manipulate the image position. All controls are available to the user to review by pressing the “Need help with labeling?” button in the top right

Labeling by dragging a box around the component

The easiest way to get started is to left click+drag a box around a component. This automatically opens the labeling menu

The label dialogue uses a type-by-function methodology. Users can select Ordnance, Explosive, Switch, Initiator, or switch. Each selection has a taxonomy of numerous items. Users can go all the way down the taxonomy to select a detailed item, or of more comfortable, something higher up with less detail.

Users make their selection and hit Save in the top right. This closes the dialogue and sets the box you labeled as the item you selected from the list. You can validate this yourself by clicking the box again and seeing the label as shown above. You can also change the box size, move the box entirely, edit the label again, or delete the box altogether.

Labeling the fastest way by searching

As users become more familiar with the taxonomy of labels they’ll want to move faster. The best way to do this is to use the search box in the top left of the labeling app. An example of this is shown in above. When selected via the search, users can simply drag a box around the target and move on.

Competitions

Competitions

Competitions are executed on collections of images taken from the database and used to help: 1. Get people labeling imagery that hasn’t yet been labeled

2. Get more input on imagery with a high degree of uncertainty

3. Create curated sets of images to test or demonstrate the website.

Competitions are created by the administrative staff, and can be found in the Image Collections on the top navigation bar.

Important Note

Please note that the labeling tool enables the searches to be made. If an image has no labels, it cannot be searched for.

Querying

Users can search the type-by-function taxonomy to include and exclude certain search items as well as filter for pre and post blast devices.

Users can then select Preview Data to see pictures that meet the criteria, or Query Export All Data to receive a download link via e-mail
